The mission of Adult Learning in Saint Paul Public Schools is to provide adults with educational opportunities to acquire and improve their literacy skills necessary to be self-sufficient and to participate effectively as productive workers, family members, and citizens.
BST/MCAs: Learners who have all their high school credits but have not passed the Minnesota Basic Skills Tests (BSTs) can prepare for and take the BSTs at the Hubbs Center. They will need verification from their previous high school that they have completed all their credits and will graduate at their previous high school.
Citizenship: Adults who qualify for citizenship can take citizenship preparation classes. Classes are offered at the Hubbs Center.
English Language Learning: ELL classes are available at several sites in St. Paul for adults who want to learn English. The entry level classes focus on functional English related to employment, health, housing, family needs, and other topics of primary concern to new immigrants and refugees.
Family Literacy: This option is designed for adults whose priority is the success and well-being of their school-age or preschool children. Family Literacy programs have four components: children’s learning, parent education, parent-child interaction, and adult literacy.
Functional Work English: Adult refugees on MFIP may be required to attend English classes designed for quick entry into the workforce. These classes are run in collaboration with Ramsey County, Workforce Solutions, and Lifetrack Resources.
GED Preparation: Adults can earn a GED diploma, granted by the State of Minnesota. Adult Learning offers GED preparation classes at the Hubbs Center and outreach sites.
GED Testing: The official GED Testing Center at the Hubbs Center has graduated more GED learners than any other state GED test center. Adults can test on a walk-in basis or prepare for the test in Adult Learning’s classes, located at the Hubbs Center as well as other sites.
Post-secondary Preparation: College preparation classes are offered at the Hubbs Center for three groups of learners: adults who have high school equivalent credentials from their own countries, adults who have high school diplomas from the U.S. but need skill development for college, and adults who are in the process of completing their GED or Basic Skills Tests.
Workforce Education: In addition to embedded employment preparation, workforce education is the core for contextualized ELL classes offered onsite in several local businesses, Functional Work English classes for adults on MFIP (see above), pre-vocational preparation classes, and preparation for the National Work Readiness Credential.
